Endlessly scrolling through luxury, state-of-the-art interiors and décor on Instagram and Pinterest can leave us yearning for an upgrade of our own spaces, especially now that we’re spending more time at home and feeling inspired to redecorate. Our environment has a powerful effect on our mood and overall wellbeing, so it’s important to create a sense of harmony in the spaces we inhabit.
Of all the spaces we occupy, the bedroom is the one we spend the most time in – up to one-third of our life! It is our refuge from the rest of the world, and it should be a place where we are able to relax and recharge comfortably in.
Whether you’re swapping out old furniture, adding a fresh coat of paint or completely transforming the space, consider the following before starting your bedroom makeover journey:
There’s inspiration all around us. Whether we’re flipping through interior magazines, or window-shopping at the mall, we can get a sense our personal style. The Internet exposes us to the latest trends from all over the world, and is a great tool for decorating tips. The mood boards we create on Pinterest and our Instagram feeds are excellent references for the decorating styles we’re drawn to. Even if your dream bedroom is outside your budget, you can easily incorporate elements of the styles you like into your space by upgrading your wall colour, bedding or décor. Pay attention to the colour schemes and overall stylistic themes that make you feel completely at ease. Are you interested in modern, contemporary styles? Romantic? Coastal-themed? Find your style and make notes.
Consider the layout of your bedroom. The size of the room determines the amount of furniture you can include in the space, in addition to the bed – which often takes up the most room. Start with a floor plan, a measured drawing of the space, and a list of items you’re including. Visualize where you want everything to be and measure the items to ensure they’ll fit the space.
Your bedroom should contain as few items as possible to reduce visual clutter,. as any visual stimulation will make it more difficult for you to fall asleep. Stick to a bed, one or two bedside tables, a chair, and a chest of drawers if needed.
The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom and dictates where everything else is placed. Make sure you can freely move around the room and have access to everything, including cupboard doors and drawers. It is important that you can open doors comfortably and walk around easily.
It’s tempting to go for bright and exciting colours when planning our bedroom makeovers, but it is better to opt for neutral palettes that promote rest and tranquility. Neutrals consist of shades of brown, black, white and grey. Cool hues found in nature are another great option, and these consist of soft shades of blue or green. Please see our blog post on colour.
While it may seem boring to some, neutral colours have the potential to look stylish and sophisticated when done correctly. Adding colourful accent pieces can liven up a neutral palette, but remember less is more.
Because the bedroom is supposed to be your private oasis, the ideal colour scheme boils down to personal preference. Whatever contributes to your personal sense of ease and relaxation is the appropriate choice for you. Make sure whatever colours you chose are soothing, radiate a calming energy and ensure a good night’s sleep.
Your bedroom does not have to have matching walls, bedding, curtains and lampshades, but symmetry and consistency is generally appealing to the eye, contributing to a sense of calm. Complementary colours within a palette are a good choice for restful sleep, so be sure to pay close attention when choosing matching colours for a balanced look. For added variation, you can experiment with different textures and patterns in similar shades.
Your bed is the first thing you notice when you walk into your bedroom, so make sure it’s as cosy and inviting as you can make it.
Often we neglect our beds, but this can negatively impact the overall mood of our bedroom. The bedroom is our sanctuary and must be treated as such.
The most important bedroom investment you can make is in a comfortable mattress and set of pillows, followed by a new duvet or quilt… Next, the visuals!
For a completely fresh look, update your bedding with a stylish new ensemble layered with accent pillows and extra blankets, or throws, to match your overall bedroom theme and colour scheme. For a neutral, seasonally transitional bed, invest in neutral white bedding. White can be paired with just about any colour and look great. If you’re more adventurous, go for something bolder, or with an interesting pattern. The options are endless. Avoid being overwhelmed by too many colours and patterns, but feel free to get creative with your bedding.

While matching your walls to your bedding creates a cohesive look, it is unnecessary. Rather focus on selecting a range of bedding options for different seasons that integrate with the overall theme of your bedroom that all work well together and can be mixed and matched effortlessly – instead of focusing on exact colour matches. Again, whatever relaxes you is key!
A place for everything, and everything in its place. This is critical for your bedroom. While it’s easy to look at elaborately decorated bedrooms and envision our own similarly styled, it is an impractical option for a functional bedroom.
The main purpose of the bedroom is to facilitate restful sleep. It is a space that signifies rest and restoration, a calming oasis in which to recharge. When cluttered, this space becomes a source of anxiety. Dust collects, objects and colours demand your attention, and your quality of sleep suffers. Be mindful of this when redecorating your bedroom, and bring in only what contributes to the relaxing atmosphere. Avoid clutter like the accumulation of papers, miscellaneous objects and clothing strewn across the bedroom. Invest in storage solutions for your clothing and other items that belong in your bedroom, and try to keep décor at a bare minimum.
Instead of adding many accent pieces to your bedroom, why not experiment with different textures of fabric and other materials? Contrast velvets and leathers, silks and faux furs, linens and metallic decals for some variation.
At the end of the day, whatever your style, If your bedroom remains a place of rest and relaxation and an escape from the stresses of the outside world, it’s perfect!
