Living Room Curtains
Beautiful curtains make a stylish impression on a room and can add the finishing decorative touches to a space. In addition to protecting your privacy, curtains serve as functional décor for a well-coordinated home.
These days, with so many unique options on the market, you don’t need to be an interior designer to find the perfect curtains for your space, but you may need a few decorating tips to nudge you in the right direction!
Read on for tips on how to style curtains.
Are living room curtains supposed to touch the floor?
Curtains that touch the floor will help a short window appear larger and create the illusion of extra height in your living room. For a dramatic puddle effect, allow fabric to gather in a pool on the floor.
Can living room curtains be short?
Considered an outdated style, shorter curtains create the illusion of a smaller space. However, there are practical reasons for shorter curtains. For example, if the floor is obscured by an immovable object or a piece of furniture that sits just so.
Shorter curtains are also easier to clean and require less maintenance.
Does a living room need curtains?
Curtains are a stylish way to protect your privacy, but they can also make a lowlight room feel gloomier. If you are satisfied with your lack of privacy, or live in a secluded area, the decision to put up curtains depends on the amount of daylight you are exposed to, the size of your windows and the quality of your view.
In lowlight environments, curtains can create a dark and gloomy atmosphere. One solution is to use sheer curtains, and the other is to forgo them entirely (if privacy is of no concern).
If your windows are extremely small, or in an interesting shape, curtains may obscure their details.
If you are fortunate enough to have a breathtaking view from your living room, it may preferable not to obstruct it with curtains. This, again, applies only if privacy is of no concern, and you don’t mind powerful rays of sunlight!
How to choose living room curtains?
When choosing curtains for your living room, it is important to consider the look and feel of the space, and the purpose of the curtains.
For many people, curtains are a practical addition to a space, offering privacy, and blocking out, or diffusing, sunlight. For others, they serve an additional decorative purpose, dressing the view and tying the style elements of the room together.
Consider the style of furniture and décor in your living room and try to select curtains that complement the mood you’ve created with your furnishings.
The colours, textures and opacity of curtains influences the way sunlight illuminates the room, and the overall ambiance of the space.
If you want a light, airy and modern look and feel, choose sheer or semi-sheer unlined curtains in neutral shades that complement your furnishings or décor.
These types of curtains will diffuse sunlight, and offer limited privacy.
If you want a warm, cosy and more traditional look and feel, go for fuller lined blackout curtains with a beautiful design that coordinates with accent pops of colour, pattern or texture in the space, such as pillows, upholstery or carpets.
These types of curtains will block sunlight out completely, and offer complete privacy, but can create a gloomy feeling if the walls and furnishings are too dark.

How to measure living room curtains?
Start by measuring the width of your curtain rod or curtain track, and multiply it by two in order to achieve fuller looking curtains.
If you don’t have a curtain rod or curtain track, measure 15cm above the top of the window pane. This is a good place to put your curtain rod or curtain track.
Before you measure the drop, decide how long you want your curtains to be.
If you want shorter curtains, measure 1cm above the window sill.
If you want longer curtains, measure 15cm below the window sill.
If you want your curtains to drape to the floor, measure 1cm above the floor.
If you want a dramatic puddle effect, allow extra 15-20 cm of fabric, or adjust to the amount you’d like.
